I haven't tried most of these, but just to let you know what's out there. NESmaker is a kickstarter for a "no coding required" tool to make actual NES games (that will run on original hardware via carts): The original Rom-hack tool for Super Mario World called Lunar Magic: There's also Box Maker on Steam, which is basically a Super Mario Maker clone: Super Mario Bros X was already mentioned, but here's a link: Something not Mario related - Mega Man Maker: Something a bit more robust, but also more complicated (it lets you make full games) Hello Mario Engine: Here's another link with more about the game: Something that is very close is called Mario Editor: I should probably just mention these websites, they are communities of people who make fan games and rom hacks: This is a long list, but it is far from complete.
